6.1 Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is a complex issue for both students and faculty to navigate.  Students should keep in mind CBU’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy, the Charter of Academic Citizenship and the Academic Integrity Policy when doing their work.

Both instructors and students have responsibilities when it comes to AI use in the classroom.

It is the instructor’s responsibility to:

  •  Include expectations around use of artificial intelligence in their course syllabus
  •  Inform students of allowable use of artificial intelligence in individual assignments  if different from course syllabus
  • Clearly lay out terms of use of artificial intelligence to students  if allowed
  • Indicate any use of AI in generating  course materials or assessing student work
  • Treat a breach in academic integrity due to artificial intelligence as they would any other breach of academic integrity, following the process outlined in the policy

It is the student’s responsibility to:

  • Read and understand the course syllabus
  • Check assignment instructions carefully for instruction on allowable use of artificial intelligence
  • Ask the instructor for clarification where unsure
  • Cite use of AI when it is permitted for assignments
  • Follow CBU’s academic integrity policy
  • Know your rights as a student and be aware of the appeals process
