12 Research Tips (Research smarter, not harder)

Prepare in advance! Plan your research when you begin working on an assignment. Don’t leave your research to the last minute.

Brainstorm ideas. Make a list of questions and topics related to your research subject.

When learning about or researching a new topic, consult reference resources and take notes.

Explore Subject Guides! These can be found on the library’s website: https://libguides.cbu.ca/sg

When searching in the catalogue or databases, use filters, located on the left-hand side of your screen. These will help narrow down your search results.

Consult the reference list on a resource to find more resources related to that subject.

Evaluate the credibility of the resources that you have found.

Save or download the resources that you have found.

Avoid plagiarism. Learn how to cite and manage your sources, use a software tool such as Zotero.
