The Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BET) (Mechanical) and Advanced Mechanical focus on the application of engineering principles to the design, analysis, and maintenance of mechanical systems combining rigorous theoretical knowledge with practical skills in key areas, such as thermodynamics, materials science, mechanical design, fluid dynamics, and control systems. The programs emphasize hands-on learning through labs, projects, and real-world applications to ensure that students gain valuable practical experience. In addition to technical competencies, the programs integrate critical project management and communication skills. These components are essential in preparing graduates to effectively lead and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, manage projects, and communicate technical information to diverse stakeholders. As the engineering industry continues to evolve, these skills are crucial for navigating the complexities of modern engineering projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget management, and seamless teamwork.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BET) (Mechanical) will be well-prepared for careers across industries, such as construction, engineering consulting, energy, and manufacturing. They will apply engineering principles to solve complex real-world challenges while demonstrating leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that are vital in the engineering workforce.

Program Options

The Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BET) (Mechanical) degree is available  through different pathways:

Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical) 90-credits

Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical) with Co-op 90-credits

Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Advanced Mechanical 120-credits

Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Advanced Mechanical with Co-op 120-credits

 

Both the 90-credit Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical) and the 120-credit Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Advanced Mechanical can be completed as a co-op program. Students who achieve the required academic standing of a 70% overall average in program-aligned courses are eligible to complete a work placement. Placements will be vetted for suitability by a co-op committee of the Engineering faculty. Students may apply to positions identified by the engineering department and/or co-op coordinator, or take a position outside these streams with the approval of the Engineering Department Co-op committee. If students wish to combine more than one work term at a co-op position, they may, subject to the approval of the Engineering Department Co-op committee. Students are required to present a progress report at the midpoint (8 weeks for a 16 week placement) of their work placement and a final report at the end of the placement. These reports are evaluated by the faculty member assigned to the course listing for the work placement.

Students who achieve the required academic standing of a 70% overall average in program-aligned courses are eligible to complete a work placement. Placements will be vetted for suitability by the co-op committee of the Engineering faculty. Students may apply to positions identified by the Engineering department and/or co-op coordinator, or take a position outside these streams with the approval of the Engineering department co-op committee. There are two work-term placements within the 90-credit program and three work-term placements within the 120-credit program, each of 4 months duration. Work schedules vary from placement to placement, but it is expected that the employer provides a minimum of 35 hours per week for 14 weeks. Work terms are planned for the summer. However, students may apply for and secure placements during any academic term, after they have completed 30 credits of course work.

If a student wishes to combine more than one work term at a co-op position, they may, subject to the approval of the Engineering department co-op committee.
