6 Student Profile

Welcome to the Continuing Care Assistant Program. We wish you success as you journey through the program to meet your goal of becoming a CCA. As with any program, there may be some challenges that arise throughout the year. As we facilitate and assist you with your learning, it is helpful that we know a little bit about you and ask that you start thinking about the year ahead. We ask that you take a few moments to answer the following questions.

Other things for you to think about…

Students in the program need to have some flexibility within their daily schedule to meet the program requirements.

  • Classes and labs may be any time between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 pm.
  • There are mandatory work placements in which will include weekends, holidays, evening and overnight shifts.
  • Shifts are either 8 hours, 10 hours or 12 hours – beginning anytime from 6a.m to 11p.m. CCA’s can work all hours of the day and night

Sometimes students are met with challenges to fulfill these requirements, in particular around transportation and childcare. Keeping this in mind, ask yourself the following questions to help you plan for the year:

  1. Do I have flexible childcare available?
  2. Do I have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle?
  3. How will I get to my home care work placements?
  4. If I rely on Transit, do I have a backup plan for evening, overnight or weekend transportation when bus hours are reduced?
  5. If I am employed while attending college, will I be able to schedule my work around the college work placements?
  6. Have I considered the cost of transportation to the work placement sites?
  7. Have I checked the website about costs for the program?
