2.11 Application of Topical Fluoride

Protocol: The learner must successfully demonstrate accurate application of topical fluoride.

Criteria:

Student completed procedure protocol accurately Successful (S)
Student did not complete procedure protocol accurately Unsuccessful (U)

Procedure Protocol

Complete armamentarium assembled

Patient is seated in upright position and procedure explained

Use mirror to inspect oral cavity

Appropriate sized fluoride trays used for patient

Appropriate type of fluoride used for patient

Appropriate amount of fluoride dispensed

Patient given LVE and instructed on use

All teeth dried and retraction maintained

Fluoride trays inserted with cotton roll(s) in place

Fluoride trays left in place for appropriate time

Excess fluoride removed

Complete post-operative instructions provided

Procedure accurately documented

Safety measures followed

Infection control protocols followed

Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate communication skills
