2.6 Application of Topical Anaesthetic

ASSISTING with LOCAL ANESTHETIC

Protocol: The learner must successfully demonstrate application of topical anesthetic to specific injection sites, assist with local anesthetic, and identifying the nerves affected.

Criteria:

Student completed procedure protocol accurately Successful (S)
Student did not complete procedure protocol accurately Unsuccessful (U)

Procedure Protocol

Complete armamentarium assembled

Explained procedure to the patient

Positioned the dental equipment to facilitate treatment and ergonomics

Placed a small amount of topical anesthetic on a cotton tip applicator

Used mirror to inspect oral cavity

Dried the oral mucosa with 2 x 2 gauze and kept the tissue retracted

Placed the topical anesthetic on the specific injection site

Left topical for time recommended by the manufacturer

Prepared the local anesthetic syringe

Prepared the correct anesthetic and needle length for injection site(s) selected

When the operator indicated, removed cotton tip applicator and prepared to pass the syringe

Placed the capped syringe within the operator’s reach

Demonstrated loading second cartridge and test syringe flow

Rinsed the patient’s mouth thoroughly

Identified the nerves affected

Gave post-op instructions for the procedure

Documented anesthetic procedure

Disassembled the syringes

Disposed of needle and anesthetic cartridge

Safety measures followed

Infection control protocols followed

Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate communication skills
