2.8 Preliminary Impressions
Protocol: The learner must successfully fabricate a preliminary impression.

Maxillary Impression |
Appropriate tray selected ¼ inch clearance distal to the last molar |
Tray adjusted with wax as necessary |
Mixing time within recommendations. |
Material homogeneous |
Tray loaded with less material in the posterior area |
Tray seated as per protocol |
Tray stabilized until set (at least 1 minute) |
Tray removed smoothly |
Tray did not impinge on tissue causing abrasion |
Tray was centered on midline |
Teeth all present, no bubbles, no metal tray showing through |
Tissue present to include 2mm beyond the gingival margins |
Tuberosity present with the exception of the wisdom teeth |
Labial frenums present |
Peripheral roll present, no bubble larger than 5 mm in the critical area |
Mandibular Impression |
Appropriate tray selected ¼ inch clearance distal to the last molar |
Tray adjusted with wax as necessary |
Mixing time within recommendations |
Material homogeneous |
Tray loaded with less material in the posterior area |
Tray seated as per protocol and patient instructed to lift up tongue |
Tray stabilized until set (at least 1 minute) |
Tray removed smoothly |

Retromolar area present with the exception of the wisdom teeth |

All fully erupted dentition present on impressions in detail with no more than one retake per arch (determined by operator) |
