2.8 Preliminary Impressions

Protocol: The learner must successfully fabricate a preliminary impression.

Criteria:

Student completed procedure protocol accurately Successful (S)
Student did not complete procedure protocol accurately Unsuccessful (U)

Procedure Protocol

Complete armamentarium assembled

Use mirror to inspect oral cavity

Patient is seated in upright position and procedure explained

Try-in impression trays

Maxillary Impression

Appropriate tray selected ¼ inch clearance distal to the last molar

Tray adjusted with wax as necessary

Mixing time within recommendations.

Material homogeneous

Tray loaded with less material in the posterior area

Tray seated as per protocol

Tray stabilized until set (at least 1 minute)

Tray removed smoothly

Tray did not impinge on tissue causing abrasion

Tray was centered on midline

Teeth all present, no bubbles, no metal tray showing through

Tissue present to include 2mm beyond the gingival margins

Tuberosity present with the exception of the wisdom teeth

Labial frenums present

Peripheral roll present, no bubble larger than 5 mm in the critical area

Mandibular Impression

Appropriate tray selected ¼ inch clearance distal to the last molar

Tray adjusted with wax as necessary

Mixing time within recommendations

Material homogeneous

Tray loaded with less material in the posterior area

Tray seated as per protocol and patient instructed to lift up tongue

Tray stabilized until set (at least 1 minute)

Tray removed smoothly

Tray did not impinge on tissue causing abrasion

Tray was centered on midline

Teeth all present, no bubbles, no metal tray showing through

Tissue present to include 2mm beyond the gingival margins

Retromolar area present with the exception of the wisdom teeth

Labial frenums present

Peripheral roll present, no bubble larger than 5 mm in the critical area

All fully erupted dentition present on impressions in detail with no more than one retake per arch (determined by operator)

Procedure completed in time allotted

Patient dismissed with a clean face

Disinfected impressions

Procedure documented in the patient’s chart

Safety measures followed

Infection control protocols followed

Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate communication skills
