2.31 Pit and Fissure Sealant

Protocol: Student will prepare the set up and place a sealant, using dental dam and cotton roll isolation.

Criteria:

Student completed procedure protocol accurately Successful (S)
Student did not complete procedure protocol accurately Unsuccessful (U)

Procedure Protocol

Gathered the appropriate supplies

Position the dental equipment to facilitate treatment and ergonomics

Checked the syringe flow of the etch and sealant materials

Polished the surfaces to be treated
Verified that surfaces are clean

Prevented contamination when isolating with cotton rolls for etching technique

Applied etching agent

Rinsed and dried the teeth, verified etched surfaces

Placed the sealant on the etched surfaces

Light cured the material

Prevented contamination when isolating with cotton rolls for self-etching adhesive technique

Applied self-etch adhesive

Placed the sealant on the etched surfaces

Light cured the material

Evaluated sealant with explorer, added material if required

Flossed the adjacent teeth

Checked the occlusion and prepared for adjustments as necessary

Wiped off smear layer with cotton roll

Documented procedure in patient’s chart

Safety measures followed

Infection control protocols followed

Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate communication skills
