2.18 Film Bite-wing Survey

Protocol: The student will be able to produce a four-film bite wing survey.

Criteria:

Student completed procedure protocol accurately Successful (S)
Student did not complete procedure protocol accurately Unsuccessful (U)

Procedure Protocol

Complete armamentarium assembled

Turned on X-ray machine and selected setting

Set-up imaging software for appropriate survey

Placed all necessary barriers

Asked the patient to remove eyeglasses and all piercings

Positioned the patient

Draped the patient with a lead apron and thyroid collar

Perform hand hygiene and don exam gloves

Used a mouth mirror to inspect the oral cavity

Asked the patient to remove any removable prosthetic appliances

Placed the sensor in the patient’s mouth for a right molar bitewing exposure

Resulting image is of diagnostic quality

Placed the sensor in the patient’s mouth for a right premolar bitewing exposure

Resulting image is of diagnostic quality

Placed the sensor in the patient’s mouth for a left premolar bitewing exposure

Resulting image is of diagnostic quality

Placed the sensor in the patient’s mouth for a left molar bitewing exposure

Resulting image is of diagnostic quality

Overall Evaluation

Set the vertical angulation

Positioned the horizontal angulation

PID centered on sensor

Used the correct exposure

Images are of diagnostic quality with no more than 1 retake required

If required, retake resulted in diagnostic image

Documents chart according to protocol

Safety measures followed

Infection control protocols followed

Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate communication skills
