2.15 Placement and Removal of Matrixes and Wedges

Protocol: The student will place and remove a Tofflemire matrix, celluloid matrix or other matrix system and wedge(s.

Criteria:

Student completed procedure protocol accurately Successful (S)
Student did not complete procedure protocol accurately Unsuccessful (U)

Procedure Protocol

Complete armamentarium assembled and dental dam placed

Use mouth mirror to inspect the operative site

Verified correct assembly of the matrix and tofflemire retainer

Retainer is parallel to the buccal surfaces of the tooth with diagonal slot facing toward the gingiva

Adjusted loop securely around the tooth

Selected correct size and number of wedges

Used cotton pliers to insert the wedge(s)

Placed wedge(s) in the appropriate embrasure space(s) for the restoration

Verified sealed gingival margin(s) with explorer

Created proximal contact(s) with the ball burnisher

Restoration is placed

Loosen retainer

Removed the wedge using cotton pliers

Slid the retainer toward the occlusal surface

Removed matrix to prevent fracture of the restoration

Discarded the used matrix band in the sharps container

Demonstrates use, placement, and removal of other matrix system, if utilized

Safety measures followed

Infection control protocols followed

Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate communication skills
