Pre-Term Checklist for Faculty

The Pre-Term GenA.I. Checklist for Faculty (.pdf) contains the most important, before-start-of-term tasks that establish expectations around use of AI and what “academic integrity” means within the specific course. Additionally, it includes tasks that serve to augment transparency, trust and dialogue around GenAI use in the classroom and assessments.

The checklist is divided into four tasks, with resources that accompany each task:

Write a Syllabus Statement

This section asks you to create a clear AI policy for your syllabus that defines academic integrity expectations in your course. You might consider including specifics on when and why students can and cannot use AI tools,  and outline how students must cite or disclose their AI usage.

Review Course Assignments

This section has you consider undertaking an “assessment audit” to determine whether AI could complete your assignments and if AI use would still provide valid evidence of student learning. For each assignment, articulate and share the pedagogical rationale with students, explaining what they will gain from completing the work, and identify any unintentional barriers to access or participation.

Support Your Students

This section guides to to have open discussions about academic integrity and AI use with students during the first class, and provide anonymous feedback mechanisms for students to share concerns. Make student support resources easily accessible through your course homepage and syllabus to help students navigate academic challenges.

Take Care of Yourself

This section asks you to model appropriate AI use by being transparent about how you use AI tools in course development and communication, and to identify colleagues and resources who can serve as your support network and sounding board throughout the academic year.
