Standard – Campus Housing and Personal Property
The Campus Housing and Personal Property standard ensures that students maintain a clean, safe, and respectful living environment for themselves and others. Students are encouraged to take pride in their living spaces and help foster a welcoming community. Actions that damage or alter Campus Housing facilities or infringe on the property rights of others are prohibited to maintain the integrity and safety of the housing environment.
The following actions are breaches of NSCC’s Campus Housing and Personal Property standard and may result in sanctions:
- Damaging or altering Campus Housing facilities in any way is strictly prohibited.
- Theft of Campus Housing property or other students’ personal belongings.
- Removing, altering, or relocating Campus Housing property unless done by authorized staff.
- Damaging furniture or culinary appliances/utensils through negligence or improper use, regardless of intention.
- Removing door closures or window screens.
- Blocking room entrances, exits, or placing furnishings too close to heating or air conditioning units/vents, regardless of intention.
- Using Campus Housing spaces or services for commercial purposes, including hosting events or selling goods or services for profit.
- Storing personal belongings and/or Campus Housing property outside of the student’s assigned room or suite (including items such as sporting equipment or bicycles).
This standard is in place to protect personal property and maintain the shared spaces of Campus Housing in a respectful and functional manner.
Examples of Breaches of the Campus Housing and Personal Property
The following are examples of breaches that may occur in Campus Housing. Please note that these examples are fictitious and have been created by NSCC Housing & Student Life staff as hypotheticals, based on years of experience working in housing. They are not reflective of current student breaches. Responses to community standards breaches may vary depending on the specific circumstances, including the severity of the behavior, the impact on others, and any prior breaches. The details of each situation will be carefully considered before determining the appropriate action.
- A student unintentionally damages a piece of furniture in the common area while moving their belongings but does not report the incident to the housing staff. The action breaches the policy of maintaining and respecting Campus Housing property. (Level 1 Standard breach)
- A student takes a bicycle from a shared bike rack in the parking area without permission. This action breaches the property rights of another student and disrupts the integrity of the Campus Housing environment. (Level 2 Standard breach)
- A student is found responsible for intentionally damaging the television in the common lounge area of Campus Housing. The student was witnessed striking the TV with an object during an argument, resulting in the screen being shattered. The damage is deemed to be deliberate, and repair or replacement costs are substantial. This compromises the safety and dignity of the campus community, damages property intended for communal use, and undermines the shared living space’s functionality. The student’s actions disrupt the respectful environment of the campus housing and pose a financial burden to the community. (Level 3 Standard breach)
