Standard – Harassment Discrimination & Bullying
NSCC maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding all forms of harassment, bullying, and discrimination within Campus Housing. These behaviors create a harmful environment and are strictly prohibited. Any student found engaging in such activities will face serious consequences in accordance with Campus Housing Community Standards and College policies.
Harassment:
- Harassment is defined as abusive, unfair, or demeaning treatment that includes words or actions which disparage, humiliate, offend, or embarrass an individual or group. This behavior is known or ought reasonably to be known as unwelcome. Harassment can involve repeated actions or a single severe incident. It may also include actions based on any characteristic protected by the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act.
Bullying:
- Bullying involves offensive, abusive, intimidating, or insulting behavior that makes the recipient feel threatened, humiliated, or vulnerable. It undermines the individual’s self-confidence and diminishes their sense of self-worth. Bullying can take various forms, including physical, verbal, or emotional abuse.
Discrimination:
- Discrimination refers to making distinctions based on a protected characteristic (whether intentional or not), resulting in unfair treatment. It includes actions, behaviors, or attitudes that may offend or deny fair treatment, and can involve race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and other protected attributes under the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act.
This standard is in place to protect all students, ensuring that everyone in Campus Housing is treated with respect and dignity. Any violation of these standards will be met with immediate action and sanctions.
All incidents involving harassment, bullying, discrimination, will immediately be classified as Level Three Community Standards breach.
