59 Robert’s Rules of Order
Students’ Council meetings follow Robert’s Rules of Order to help guide the meeting through the agenda in a professional and official manner.
Who is the Chair?
The President of the Student Association is automatically considered the Chair of the Students’ Council, and as such should be the one to keep the meeting on track by following Robert’s Rules of Order. If your elected President would prefer to hire a coordinator to act in this capacity, that is also an option for your team.
The Chair should remain a neutral, non-voting member of the council, except in the case where a tie-breaker vote is required.
Voting Process through Robert’s Rules of Order[1]
Proxy Voting
Council members may vote by proxy in the following situation only:
- Meeting convened is of an emergency nature, called by the Executive Committee to facilitate a vote that is time sensitive; and
- It has been established that quorum cannot be met in person for this meeting.
Should the meeting move forward with email proxy voting, it is assumed that quorum will be the entirety of the Students’ Council (both elected and appointed) and that a vote of 50%+1 of all members is required to pass the motion.
Proxy votes must remain open for 48 hours.
