10 SA Elections Policy
REQUIRED READING
The SA Election Policy is in place to ensure all NSCCSA elections are carried out in a fair and equitable manner.
Elections Scheduling and Management
Available positions for the Spring Elections include:
- President
- VP Finance
- VP Activities
Available positions for the Fall Elections include:
- VP Services
- VP Communications, and
- All other unfilled positions
Some campuses choose to ask for Students’ Council approval to offer all five (5) Executives roles during the Spring Elections.
NSCC Student Life works with Presidents to finalize key dates (nominations, campaigns, voting) and communicates them to the Student Association. The Student Association Executives then share those details with students.
Elections Oversight on Campus
The President (or designate) manages both the Fall and Spring Elections at the campus level. Their responsibilities during the Elections period include:
- Ensuring Election policies and procedures are followed
- Organizing candidate recruitment campaigns and marketing the election
- Communicating campaigning rules and guidelines clearly to candidates
- Informing students about how and when to vote
- Responding to questions, complaints, and infractions
- Consulting with Student Life Staff on serious issues or appeal
Elections Communications
The President may choose to work with the rest of the executive team on promoting the elections and may ask VP Communications to send elections related emails.
Required Elections promotions and communications are broken down below based on when the information should be shared with students.
Prior to the Nomination Period
- Post information about all available positions at your campus
- Communicate nomination period dates and timing
- Communicate campaigning period dates and timing
- Communicate voting process and dates and timing
Beginning of the Campaigning Period
- Announce candidate names and voter messages
- Provide voting details
- Communicate any official candidate campaign activities
- Voting reminder emails may be sent when the Voting Period opens
Candidate Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to run for an Executive position, students must be a “member in good standing” (academically eligible, financially clear, paid SA fees, etc.) and must be a student at the campus where they’re running. Candidates in the Spring Elections must be returning students at that campus.
Candidate eligibility is confirmed by Student Life and then communicated to both the Candidate and the President/Student Association Executives by the beginning of the Campaigning Period.
Candidates must then meet with the President (or designate) to review Sections 6 & 7 of the Elections Policy prior to beginning their campaign.
Online Voting
Voting is held through NSCC Web Services, and is open for at least 3 days. The voting list is compiled and maintained by NSCC and kept private.
If only one candidate runs, they must still win a “Yes” vote by a majority (50% + 1) to be elected.
