27 Student Association Elections
The Student Association hosts semi-annual Elections, and part of the President’s role is Elections oversight.
- Spring Elections are held to fill roles for the next academic year and allow elected students the opportunity to participate as an Executive in a summer term to prepare for the year ahead.
- Fall Elections are held to fill any vacancies on the Executive team that remain open after the summer term.
Promotional Expectations
Promoting the Nomination Period
-
setting up an info booth
-
connecting with faculty to arrange class visits (when possible)
-
asking to speak during orientation
-
sending out information in your weekly newsletter
-
posting to SA social media
Promoting the Voting Period
An example – IT Campus often hosts a free pizza event, asking all Elections Candidates to volunteer to help distribute the pizza. This allows students an additional opportunity to meet all candidates running for election, as well as providing students with a direct link to submit their vote.
Why is Promotion important?
Helping to spread the word about the nomination period will ensure that any interested students have the opportunity to run for the vacant positions, allowing them the opportunity to campaign and share their message to students at your campus.
Spreading the word during the voting period will ensure that the entire student population at your campus exercises their right to vote for who they want to hold those positions.
Promoting both will ensure you have a great team to work with for the rest of your term on the Student Association, or that you have students in place when your term ends.
President’s Role
In addition to promotion, you may be asked to meet with candidates to confirm their candidacy and ensure they understand the campaigning requirements as outlined in the SA Elections Policy, sections 6 & 7.
- Please review the Chapter 11; SA Elections Policy in Module 3.
One More Thing
As you will note, we often refer to President or designate when talking about the elections process. A designate can and should be appointed if the President intends to run for office for the next academic year. Please speak to your Student Life Assistant about appointing a designate to conduct elections if you intend to run for a position.
