Assessment

  • Assessed the environment in preparation for hand hygiene.
  • Inspected surface of hands and fingers for cuts or breaks.
  • Inspected hands for heavy soiling.
  • Kept fingernails short and free of nail polish.

  • Established need to use soap and water versus hand sanitizer.

Evaluation

  •  Inspected surface of hands.

Hand Hygiene – Implementation

  1. Removed jewelry and wristwatch.
  2. Removed long sleeved clothing.
  3. Stood at sink without touching sink with hands or uniform.
  4. Prepared paper towel.
  5. Regulated water flow and adjusted water temperature to warm without splashing.
  6. Wet hands and lowered arms, keeping them lower than the elbows.
  7. Applied antiseptic liquid soap to hands.
  8. Lathered hands and applied friction to all skin surfaces for at least 15-20 seconds- including wrists; interlaced fingers; rubbed fingernails in palms; rubbed thumbs in hands.
  9. Rinsed thoroughly, keeping hands below elbows.
  10. Used prepared paper towel to dispense sufficient amount of paper towel to dry hands from fingers to wrists and forearms.
  11. Dispensed more paper towel and used to turn off water
  12. Discarded paper towel properly.
