Chapter 8 questions

  1. List similarities and differences among the senses discussed thus far, including vision (Chapter 7).
  2. Design a brochure / pamphlet teaching a specific target audience (children, teenagers, or adults) about hearing and how to protect their hearing. Make sure the information you include is accurate, written at an appropriate language level given the specific audience, and relevant to the lives of many people in that target demographic.
  3. Explain cochlear implants and how they work to a person who has no neuroscience background.
  4. What do the different blue lines in Figure 8.10 represent?
  5. Compare and contrast vertigo and tinnitus.
  6. Find a hermunculus or femunculus representation in a reputable source. Compare and contrast this representation with the homunculus representation in the textbook.
  7. Compare and contrast the dorsal column-medial lemniscus tract and spinothalamic tract. Is there anything you find confusing about one or both of these tracts? If so, what specifically is confusing?
  8. Select 2 of the cutaneous receptors listed in this chapter. Compare and contrast those 2 receptors. (Challenge yourself: Try to work with the 2 you understand the least.)
  9. Compare and contrast retinotopic organization and tonotopic organization.
  10. Activity – Sound of Metal movie – Watch in class (or Watch at home and report as an individual activity). Be prepared to discuss your observations of the main character in terms of diagnosis.
