Chapter 11 questions

  1. Could we use the term “neurosocial model of addiction”? Why or why not?
  2. Explain the 4 types of tolerance, including both names for each one, and give an example of each.
  3. Compare and contrast the models (experiments) of substance use. Which is associated with drug seeking and which is associated with drug liking?
  4. Compare and contrast agonists (including the different types of agonists) and antagonists.
  5. Select 3 commonly misused substances, and give a 1-2 sentences on how each substance might affect the body.
  6. Explain the 3 components of the biopsychosocial model of substance use disorder. Give 2 examples of how each of those components might impact addiction.
  7. Give 3 examples of the sources of stigma surrounding addiction.
  8. You are sitting in PSYC 232 and you have the urge to look at your phone. You would prefer not to be distracted in class, but you decide to look at it anyway.
    a) Describe the aspects of the reward circuit that explain both the urge and the decision to look.
    b) Describe how you could study this phenomenon using a self-administration paradigm and a conditioned place preference experiment.
